There are Beasts!

Here's a quick lil sketch of someone at the biggo Mutant Party in my new submissions. A nerdy lil "pencil neek geek" all dressed up like a professor with Beasty parts. Rawr!

And here's a girl dressed as Wolvie. Also sketched out quickly.

I wonder if I should only post finished drawings on here? I always like to see artist's quick sketches and then how much they refine them for a final drawing. Maybe it's time for some final drawings. I should be done with these pages this weekend. Those will be finished pieces.

Thumbnails

Here are my thumbnails for my newest set of pages for Marvel. You can click on them and blow them up. Not sure if they make much sense without the script. I haven't heard yet if it is OK to post the script I am working from. I don't see anything wrong with it, but I want to be sure before I post them. Needless to say, Magneto shows up and throws Colossus through some glass while Angel and Nightcrawler get ready to kick some mega mutant booty. They'll make more sense when I post my final pages. Looking forward to drawing them. There are a lot of everyday people in the background dressed up like X-Men. That should be a hoot to draw 8)

Oh, and there's a drawing of Magneto to help get his helmet down.

Digital coloring

Oh, Dang! I just learned how to copy line art so you can color underneath it. I have painted traditionally for about 8 years now. I never wanted to get into digital painting. But this was a lot of fun.

The drawing, is by Ben Templesmith. He put it up on his blog for people to color. After seeing his artwork and looking at some of my favorite artists I think I am going to try to get funky with my comic art. I've got the basics of solid storytelling. I want to draw them more like some of my drawings I did last year. Something like these.

And here's the drawing by Templesmith.

I figured I would take the time to look up how to paint under the line art and I am glad I did. I only got to spend about 15 to 20 min on it. I wanted to walk to the river before it got dark. But now I want to color some of my own work and see how that turns out. Yay for Learning!! And Yay for Art!!

Let me know what ya think. I'll work on it more when I finish my newest samples for Marvel.

A lotta sketches today...

Whew! I did a lot of drawing today. I love having a day off from the day job. I started off trying to find my own personal look for Emma Frost, The White Queen. She is in the next set of submissions for Marvel and I had to figure out how I wanted her to look. I like the old school style with the flat straight parted hair, but I wanted to make it longer like she wears it now. I was also wanting to capture her sense of elegance. One of the most fun things about drawing characters for me is trying to capture their attitude, their essence. And Emma is classy, even pompous. I like some of the first sketches i did.

She's running in the submissions so I wanted to see if I could show that as well. Adding foreshortening can make a drawing really pop out.
Tomorrow I hope to do the thumbs for my newest submission. It involves The White Queen, Cyclops, Collosus, Nightcrawler, Wolverine, Angel, some biggo Sentinels and Magneto. And some random peeps dressed in X-Men garb. Oh, man. Should be loads of fun 8)

Wolvie getting some Hulk action

Here's a quick sketch I did of Wolvie and the Hulk the other night at the Matador. Snikt!

Cry Havok!

Here's a drawing of old school Havok. I always loved the brother of Cyclops that was always living in the shadow of his older brother. I'm looking forward to drawing some schmo wearing this costume in my new submissions. 8)

Soaring High!

Here's a quick sketch of Angel. I always like drawing wings. I've done a few commissions of birds; blue birds, scissor tail flycatchers, cardinals and canaries. I have always liked Angels outfit.

Drawing all the time

Since I started sending in samples to Marvel back in Nov of last year, I have been keeping track of how many hours I spend drawing or painting. (I shave a few hours off any time I am doing research because it is easy to get distracted on the computer. Curse you Wiki!!)

I think this has helped me not only see how much time I put in artin' it up it also let's me know when I need to step up to the plate and get some more hours in. On average I spend between 25 to 30 hours a week on top of my 35 hour a week day job. That's a ton more than when I was in art school where I may have spent 10 to 15 hours a week on top of my barely 20 hour a week day job. pfft.

I've been posting a lot of sketches to my Deviant Art page, but I thought I should probably update this site as well. Most of these are just small loose sketches, about 3 to 4 inches tall and not finished pieces. My printer went down so I haven't been able to transfer these to a bigger size with my lightbox. But now I have a pile of sketches to work on. I like having a bunch of projects to keep me busy.

I'm working on an X-Men script for my next set of sample pages so I have been drawing various characters to get a feel for them. Here's Nightcrawler, one of my all time favorite characters. The Fuzzy Elf! I added him to my header up top with Wolvie. I'll keep posting more sketches while I am working on these new pages.
